YWCA tour - May 2017

YWCA Tour

Just south of Sick Kids Hospital, the corner of Elm and Elizabeth accommodates a large building that cleverly integrates a heritage building. Opened in 2011, the YWCA's Elm Centre showcases light-filled offices, activity rooms, and public rental spaces such as the auditorium, called Nancy's (after Senator Nancy Ruth) and meeting rooms. A roof-top garden and secure outdoor areas, including a play space, enhance the safety of the tenants who live in geared-to- income apartments. Among these tenants are those in Winona's Place. This complex provides 50 apartments for indigenous women and their families. There are many programs designed for them to heal from violence and discrimination and to learn new and traditional skills.

Here on May 9, 2017 members of the Toronto and Area Council of Women were warmly welcomed by the YWCA's representative to the Toronto Council, Carol Wladyka who, assisted by another Carol and later by Ashley, gave us a thorough and informative tour. While we were enjoying tea and cookies in the boardroom and learning more about the Y, the CEO Heather McGregor took time to leave her meeting to come and greet us. After this wonderful outing which provided us with a pleasant change from our traditional meetings, most of us stayed for lunch at the Italian bistro in the building. Heartfelt thanks to Carol and everyone who gave us such a cordial welcome.

FYI: Did you know that the YWCA was formed in 1873, 20 years before the founding of the Toronto Council, to assist young women moving to the City to work? It has always remained separate from the YMCA and is proudly ecumenical – a small room is available for prayer or rest. For more information, check the web at ywcatoronto.org or call 416-961-8100.
